Asking the price, asking for a kilo, talking the price down — phrases for the pijaca, where Serbian is needed every single morning.
- Добар дан, пошто је парадајз? · Dobar dan, pošto je paradajz?Hello, how much are the tomatoes?Pošto? = how much? (colloquial); paradajz = tomatoes.
- Дајте ми пола кила. · Dajte mi pola kila.Half a kilo, please.Pola kila = half a kilo; kilo = a kilogram, colloquially.
- Једно кило кромпира, молим. · Jedno kilo krompira, molim.One kilo of potatoes, please.Krompir = potato; krompira is the genitive after a measure.
- Да ли је домаће? · Da li je domaće?Is this local, home-grown?Domaće = home-grown, the top quality mark at any market.
- Колико кошта грожђе? · Koliko košta grožđe?How much are the grapes?Grožđe = grapes, a neuter collective noun.
- Да ли могу да пробам? · Da li mogu da probam?May I try one?Probati = to taste. At the market it's expected.
- Дајте ми оно, тамо. · Dajte mi ono, tamo.Give me that one over there.Saves you when the word escapes: ono = that one, tamo = over there.
- Може ли мало јефтиније? · Može li malo jeftinije?Could you do it a bit cheaper?Jeftinije = cheaper. Light haggling near closing time is fine.
- Измерите ми, молим вас. · Izmerite mi, molim vas.Could you weigh it for me?Izmeriti = to weigh or measure.
- Дајте ми још једну везу першуна. · Dajte mi još jednu vezu peršuna.And a bunch of parsley too.Veza peršuna = a bunch of parsley.
- Је ли свеже данас? · Je li sveže danas?Is it fresh today?Je li…? opens a yes-no question.
- Колико сам дужан? · Koliko sam dužan?How much do I owe you?Literally how much am I owing. A woman says dužna.
- Имате ли да ми вратите на хиљаду? · Imate li da mi vratite na hiljadu?Do you have change for a thousand?Vratiti = to give change; hiljada = a thousand.
- То је све, хвала. · To je sve, hvala.That's everything, thanks.Sve = everything.
- Хвала, пријатно! · Hvala, prijatno!Thank you, all the best!Prijatno works here too, as a warm goodbye.
